Abstract:

Aesthetics appreciation is not exclusive to artistic experiences. Symmetry, beauty, imagination, and creativity are some examples of aesthetic features that can be experienced through objects, products, practices of science, and also science communication. For this talk, I will explore the relation of aesthetics experiences to the achievement of scientific understanding during scientific practice. Although scientific understanding as a subject of inquiry has become widely discussed in philosophy of science, the aesthetic features related to it are usually peripherally addressed and mostly focused on imaginative processes. While I agree with Breitenbrach's assertion that imaginative activities responsible for grounding aesthetic experiences contribute to achievements of understanding, it remains to be asked how these experiences relate to the process of scientific understanding. Through a qualitative ethnographic study of an ecological research practice, I intend to show that aesthetic experiences, as epistemic mediators, enable the formation of understanding in scientific practice.
